There are many area attractions, shops, restaurants, and activities to keep everyone busy throughout a stay on Hilton Head. While beaches are the major attraction when it comes to the natural surroundings, take a moment to learn more about Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge. This refuge is open daily, sunrise to sunset.
Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge
The property consists of over 4,000 acres of salt marsh, tidal creek, maritime forest, open field, land brush, and several freshwater ponds. The acreage is spread across five major islands as well as small ‘hammocks’ creating a unique environment. Pinckney Island, the largest area, is the only area open to the public.
Nature Trails
Discover nature and wildlife along the several miles of trails. There are nine suggested hiking and biking paths with distances between a mile to as far as eight miles. The trails end at beautiful areas like Ibis, Starr, or Osprey ponds, other points of interest, as well as a 7.8-mile round trip that passes White Point, where you can enjoy some time on a small, secluded beach. Take a specific trail or combine segments for a distance that’s right for your group.
Wildlife
Because of the diverse environment, the wildlife that inhabits it is just as diverse. Many migratory birds visit, including several species of waterfowl, shorebirds, egrets, and herons, along with birds of prey and warblers, sparrows, and more. Keep your eyes peeled and your camera ready for glimpses of white-tailed deer, alligators, and others.
Tours
If you prefer some guidance, several independent tour operators offer experiences throughout the refuge and its surrounding area. Go birding with the Coastal Discovery Museum, observe dolphins by boat or kayak, or explore the marshes and creeks for the animals that call it home.
