There are many area attractions, shops, restaurants, and activities to keep everyone busy throughout a stay on Hilton Head. Swimming and walking on the beach are great ways to get a little exercise in on vacation, but there are other ways to get in some exercise while also seeing more of the island. There are many pathways and Hilton Head Island bike trails that take you around the island for some exercise and sightseeing. Plot a course and head out on two wheels to get to the nooks and crannies of the island that can’t be visited by rental car.
Hilton Head Island Bike Trails – Trail System
The bike trail system of the town has earned Hilton Head the esteemed Gold Level Bicycle Friendly Community Award. It’s the only Gold Level community in the Southeast and one of just two towns on the whole East Coast to receive the designation. The trail system takes you along the coast as well as inland and there are access points near every neighborhood. There are maps available at city hall, as well as information kiosks along the paths.
Beach Area Pathway
The beach area pathway route takes you along the coast on Forest Beach Drive, Cordillo Parkway, Pope Avenue, and part of William Hilton Parkway/U.S. 278. Stop and enjoy Compass Rose Park, or lounge anywhere along the shoreline of the Atlantic.
Island History Pathway
If you’re looking to take in some island history while you’re here, don’t miss the bike route that highlights it. The “Island History Route” is ten miles long and takes you past landmarks like Union Cemetery, First African Baptist Church, St. James Baptist Church, Cherry Hill School, Historic Mitchelville Area, and more. If you need a break, make sure to take in the history at Fish Haul Beach Park or Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park.
Long & Short Hilton Head Island Bike Trails
The Long Pathway Route is 21 miles and gives you a good look at the island. It takes you through neighborhoods like Port Royal, Indigo Run, Palmetto Dunes, Shipyard, and others for a large loop around the island. The short pathway is only 15 miles. It keeps the trip closer to the shore, but still takes you past inland areas like Spanish Wells, Indigo Run, and Wexford along Broad Creek.
