Hilton Head, Your Way

A Seasonal Guide to Finding Your Perfect Vacation

Hilton Head Island boasts beautiful weather and charm year-round, offering four seasons of island life. So when is the best time to visit Hilton Head? The answer depends on the type of trip you’re planning.

If warm ocean water, long beach days, and plentiful outdoor activities top your list, summer is the time to visit — though it’s also when crowds (and prices) are highest. Winters, on the other hand, are quieter and more relaxed, with mild temperatures, fewer visitors, and some of the best values of the year.

Our favorite time to visit Hilton Head? The spring and fall shoulder seasons. Just before and after the summer rush, you’ll experience fewer crowds, lower rates, beach-friendly temperatures, and your pick of outdoor activities and island events.

Not sure which season is right for your Hilton Head getaway? This seasonal guide breaks down what to expect throughout the year, so you can choose the best time to visit based on your travel style. But here’s a little insider tip: there’s no wrong choice — every season on Hilton Head has its own kind of magic. Let’s dive in.

Spring is best for: golfers, couples, outdoor enthusiasts, and travelers who want warm weather without peak-season crowds.

Spring is one of the best times to visit Hilton Head. Temperatures are often warm enough to enjoy a day at the beach, seasonal businesses and watersport companies are re-opening, and sailing or kayaking through the marshes is especially beautiful. In the spring, outdoor activities are back in full swing, major island events like the RBC Heritage are rolling in, and the island buzzes with fresh energy.

Spring is ideal if you love golf (there are 26 championship courses in the area), want warm – but not hot – weather, or prefer a relaxed pace with fewer visitors. With daytime highs ranging from the mid-60s and low 70s in March to the low 80s by May, it’s a perfect season for outdoor coasting dining, biking, boutique shopping in Harbour Town, and long afternoons by the water.

Spring is a favorite time to visit for a reason – there are lots of exciting events for visitors. Spring’s main event is the RBC Heritage, held each April at Harbour Town Golf Links, where PGA pros compete for the iconic plaid jacket. If you’re coming for this event, we recommend booking a home with a view of the golf course to watch the pros from your own backyard – a truly special experience.

Another favorite spring event is the Hilton Head Island Wine & Food Festival, a weeklong event at the end of March featuring wine tastings, chef-led dinners, and special events like Craft Beers at the Beach and a Sip & Stroll at the Shops at Sea Pines Center.

Good to Know – Local Tips

If you’re visiting Hilton Head in the spring, you’ll want to pack layers, as temperatures can vary throughout the day, especially near the water. Throw a pair of binoculars in your suitcase as well – spring is a great time for birdwatching along the marshes. Audubon Newhall Preserve, Sea Pines Forest Preserve, and Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge are prime viewing spots.

If golf or the RBC Heritage is part of your plans, stay in Sea Pines to be close to the action, and consider choosing a villa on the course. Palmetto Dunes is another ideal option for golfers who want easy access to multiple championship courses. Through our Explorie partnership, guests receive one complimentary round of golf and one round of mini-golf during their stay.

One last tip: spring weekends are popular, so make dinner reservations early for popular waterfront restaurants, especially on the weekends and during event weeks.

Summer is best for: family vacations, beach lovers, first-time visitors, and travelers who want the full Hilton Head experience

Summer is peak season on Hilton Head Island, and for good reason. With daytime highs in the 80s and 90s, it’s the best time to swim in the ocean and bike on Hilton Head’s fifty miles of family-friendly bike trails. The flat terrain and miles of shaded paths make biking one of the easiest ways to explore the island. (Plus, you get free bikes with your rental through Explorie!)

Summer is especially popular with families, thanks to family-friendly attractions and endless ways to stay active outdoors. During summer, all seasonal activities and adventure outfitters are open, offering access to a wide range of things to do. Our Explorie credit includes one round of golf at six local courses, one round of mini golf, a dolphin-watching tour, two bikes, backpack beach chairs, and an umbrella – perks you’ll make good use of in summer.

Summertime is the best time to enjoy a home with a private pool (though they’re open year-round). Summer also overlaps with sea turtle season, which runs from May through October. The Coastal Discovery Museum offers guided walks through nesting areas, giving visitors a chance to learn about and safely observe these remarkable creatures.

Good to Know – Local Tips

If you’re planning to visit Hilton Head in the summer, be sure to book your vacation rental in advance, as it’s prime season. Summer is also the island’s rainiest season, with brief afternoon showers — but storms tend to pass quickly, and sunshine usually returns just as fast. Pack light rain gear and plan flexible outdoor time.

Many families plan their annual beach vacation to Hilton Head in the summer. If you’re visiting Hilton Head with kids, don’t miss the award-winning Coligny Beach Park — perfect for little ones with a splash pad, swinging benches, and outdoor showers. Other family favorites include Sea Pines Forest Preserve, dolphin cruises (included with your Explorie credit), and the Sandbox Children’s Museum

Keep in mind that parking fees apply at all public beaches, except for Coligny Beach Park. To make getting around easier, consider using the free seasonal trolley, which runs every 30 minutes from 1-10 pm (and 11 pm on Fridays and Saturdays).

If you’re visiting during sea turtle nesting season (May through October), please take precautions to help protect this threatened species by turning off beachfront lights after 10 pm and removing all beach gear overnight.

Fall is best for: couples, anniversary trips, food lovers, and travelers who want warm weather without the summer crowds

We love Hilton Head Island in the fall! You can expect summer-like weather until mid-October, making it a wonderful time for beach days, bike rides, and outdoor dining — without peak-season crowds. With many children back at school, the island feels calmer and more relaxed, while still offering plenty to do. You’ll catch fall festivals, beautiful sunsets, and highs that only start dipping into the mid 60s in November. Until then, it’s full steam ahead for fun outdoor experiences in Hilton Head.

Fall is especially popular for romantic getaways and special celebrations. Couples visiting Hilton Head in the fall can enjoy sunset cruises around the harbor, afternoons strolling through waterfront shops, and private dinners by candlelight set against a quieter, more intimate island backdrop.

Fall in Hilton Head may bring a more relaxed atmosphere, but it’s also packed with seasonal festivals and fall events. Are cheese, sausage, bread, pasta, and gelato some of your favorites? Every October, the Italian Heritage Festival at the Coastal Discovery Museum brings delicious traditional Italian foods, grape stomping, and a pizza-eating contest.

Another foodie favorite is the Oyster Festival, hosted each November at Shelter Cove Community Park & Lowcountry Celebration Park. An island tradition for over 30 years, the weekend includes an all-you-can-eat oyster and Lowcountry boil event on Friday Night, followed by festival day on Saturday, with live music, food vendors, and local artisans.

Good to Know – Local Tips

Fall brings beautiful weather, but it’s also hurricane season along the Atlantic coast. Hilton Head rarely experiences major storms, but it’s always best to be prepared. If you’re visiting during hurricane season, consider purchasing trip insurance to be safe.

Ocean temperatures remain comfortable through October, making early fall a great time for swimming and water activities. Golfers will also love the cooler mornings, lower humidity, and excellent course conditions. Birdwatchers enjoy opportunities to view migratory birds passing through the island’s marshes and preserves. And after Labor Day, parking at public beaches is free — one more reason fall is such a favorite shoulder season.

Winter is best for: snowbirds, long-term stays, golfers, pet owners, and travelers seeking a peaceful coastal escape

Winter is Hilton Head Island’s quietest season, offering a slower pace, fewer crowds, and some of the best rates of the year.  While it may be winter elsewhere, Hilton Head stays relatively mild — with daytime highs often in the 50s and 60s, and occasionally reaching the low 70s around the holidays.

Here on Hilton Head, winter days are filled with beach walks, bike rides, farmers’ markets, and ocean views. Hilton Head’s championship golf courses remain open for tee times, including three located within Sea Pines. And while the weather might not be warm enough for an ocean swim, our homes with private pools offer year-round opportunities to take a dip (inquire about options for heated pools).

Still deciding on the best time to visit Hilton Head Island? Each season offers a different experience — and the right one depends on how you like to travel.
